Researching development of neurological symptoms in patients infected with COVID-19

As of this writing, COVID-19 has affected nearly 6 million people worldwide and 140,000 people in Peru. Neurological symptoms, such as headache, loss of smell, and other neurological problems, such as strokes in young adults, have been reported in various case series and case reports, but no formal studies have yet been published on the prevalence and risk factors for development of neurological symptoms in those infected with COVID-19.

The research team led by neurologists at Cayetano Heredia Hospital, a national referral public hospital located in Lima, Peru, is starting a research study collecting data on demographics, clinical presentation, physical exam findings and laboratory test results of patients who present with neurological symptoms and COVID-19 infection. Using the Magpi mobile app for data entry, they hope that the results of this study will help inform the prevalence of certain neurological symptoms and what risk factors may worsen the presentation or duration of these symptoms, in order to better manage neurological symptoms that may be associated with the infection.

Update (July 2021): Magpi was used to conduct a single-center prospective, cross-sectional study at an isolation center functioning as a public acute-care hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic in Lima.
